Chris Libby has cataloged and scanned approximately 700 blueprints and engineering sketches. Now we're busy housing them all in archival storage.

Here is our workroom, filled to the brim. A bit chaotic!

The next phase of the project will take a bit longer. Editing the images for optimum viewing and then a final upload into Digital Maine. Hoping to finish that work by the end of September.

We are making steady progress on the digitization of the Blueprint Collection. We have completed the cataloging and description of 500 blueprints, primarily from the Boston Elevated Railway and the West End Street Railway. You can see the data here.

By the end of the day, we will have scanned approximately 50% of the blueprints. Each scan is a TIFF, at 400 dpi. At this resolution, we will be able print out full-size images to help with restoration projects.

Lower resolution scans will ultimately be available to the public at our Galleries in Digital Maine, probably some time in September 2015.

If you can't wait to see some of the images, check out our photo collection of title boxes. The image quality on these isn't up to archival standards, but they're fun to browse anyway. The Seashore Trolley Museum Libraryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04824983375415549633noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2347946254890857739.post-1558645068130769862015-07-15T10:20:00.001-07:002015-07-15T10:24:29.823-07:00Update on the Blueprint ProjectProgress continues on the blueprint project. We finished cataloging 500 prints (and there are boxes and boxes more still to unroll). The large majority of the prints come from the Boston Elevated Railway, with a smaller percentage from the West End Street Railway. Scanning has begun.

We made an interesting discovery as we were working with the prints. Many of the prints are clipped together with a cute little paperclip, called an Owl Clip. Here are some of the clips with their beefier, modern-day descendant:

The Owl Clip was first advertised in 1905 by the Owl Supply Co. of Boston and is still produced today by ACCO
Thanks to a generous donation from Seashore Trolley Museum member, James VB, the STM Library will be cataloging, preserving, and digitizing a collection of 500 blueprints from the Library's collections. The project will support the hire of an archival technician, the purchase of archival supplies for storage, and the rental of a large format scanner.

Once the project is complete (anticipated completion, September 1, 2015), the collection images and data will be searchable in the Museum image galleries on Digital Maine.

Here are some pictures of us getting set up, with some samples of the materials. There's treasure here!
We have identified the Wason Manufacturing Company Collection as a good candidate for a new grant project. This collection consists of 3000 negatives and their prints, documenting the cars built by the railways around the country. The collection dates from 1906 to 1938 and has sample photographs from every order completed during that time period. What a great resource for restoration professionals and railway modellers!

Here are some photographs of our adventure, retrieving the collection from our storage facility in the Bootts Cotton Mill in Lowell, Massachusetts.
Cummings Negative CollectionThe O.R. Cummings Negative Collection includes records for more than 900 negatives, primarily of Maine railways, but also for other cities in the U.S. and countries around the world. Interested in learning more about what the collection contains?
Many thanks to Roger Somers for doing the data entry for the collection. Cummings' negative collectionIt's been a year since O.R. Cummings passed away. He is sorely missed - not only for his amazing knowledge of electric railways, but also for his wonderful company.

O.R. is still keeping the Library Committee busy though! His negative collection has been digitized by Leo Sullivan and is now at the York County Community College Library for archival preservation. We are shifting the negatives from old acidic envelopes to archival sleeves and boxes. Roger Somers will do the data entry to capture all of the information that O.R. had recorded on the envelopes. Many thanks to everyone who assisted, especially to Karen Dooks who facilitated the purchase of supplies.
Good progress is being made on the "Preserving the Primary Sources of Maine’s Early Tourism" grant project. This project is being generously supported by the Maine State Archives and the Maine Historical Records Advisory Board. We've purchased supplies and have begun rehousing the booklets and pamphlets in their new archival enclosures. Once everything is safely preserved, we'll be entering the data into PastPerfect.
The Seashore Trolley Museum Library Committee has received a small grant from the Maine Historical Records Advisory Board, affiliated with Maine State State Archives.
Our project will be to preserve a collection of electric railway tourist brochures and pamphlets. This collection consists of more than 80 paper booklets, brochures, and timetables devoted to advertising trolley, steamboat, train, and automobile tourist excursions in Maine and around New England between 1895 and 1930.
Many of the booklets are regional (i.e. trolley trips in and around Portland), but some are souvenir booklets for individual destinations, such as Underwood Spring and the Cape Porpoise Casino. All of them, except for the time tables, are illustrated with black-and-white photographs, maps, local information, and business directories and advertisements. These documents contain a wealth of primary source material in the subject areas of local history, transportation, local geography, tourism, and leisure activities. We ended up with 13 trolley parks and, oh my, that was plenty! Chris' selection of photographs was our starting point. After that came research, research, research! What an amazing and educational experience that was. Did you know that, back in the day, you could watch two pure white horses dive from a 50-foot platform into a pool of water? Did you know that there was a musical group called the Powder Puff Girls and their show featured the Baby Vamp Review? So many odd and interesting tidbits we came across. The turn of the century in Maine was really a different world! And yet, perhaps not so different.

Just this weekend, we worked on building our exhibit in MMN's ExhibitBuilder. A wonderful online application; I would encourage any historical society or community group to take on an MMN exhibit or album. Not only is the software easy to use, but the support from MMN staff is outstanding.

Chris has gone back to graduate school and he is missed. We are very grateful for the work he did with us over the summer. Further thanks go to Randy Leclair and Doreen Rogan for writing and editing some of the exhibit's text. Thanks also to Diana Vera for clerical and archival support. And huge thanks, as always, to the members of the STM Library Committee, especially Ed Ramsdell and O.R. Cummings.

AmberThe Seashore Trolley Museum Libraryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04824983375415549633noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2347946254890857739.post-599063015273036102011-10-24T12:19:00.000-07:002011-10-24T12:22:31.078-07:00A Field Guide to Trolley CarsOur first photo album, A Field Guide to Trolley Cars, is up at the Maine Memory Network. It took a bit longer than expected, but the best things usually do. As photo selection for the trolley tour wrapped up, I discovered postcards for a place called Lake Cobbosseecontee. Unknown to myself, Amber, and other trolley enthusiasts, Lake Cobbosseecontee had its own theater and recreation area, all accessible by trolley (go figure). This brings the destination list to twelve total, something I am pleased with.

On a side note, I am beginning to notice a trend that a number of destinations share: fire. Destinations like Casco Castle in Freeport, the Cape Porpoise Casino on Cape Porpoise, the Gay White Way in York, all met an untimely end by being razed. Maybe creepy, maybe interesting, but something worth noting for sure.

Next step: cataloging!Chrishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18033003688766034612noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2347946254890857739.post-68210760939977492952011-06-28T12:05:00.000-07:002011-06-28T12:28:44.489-07:00Research and Photos and Scanning, oh my!Hello, my name is Chris, and I am the graduate intern working on the grant project under the velvety iron grip of Amber. For a history geek such as myself, this project has been gratifying as far as looking at and researching the history of old things is concerned. I am a fan of mechanically old things (and in this case, much older than myself), so this has been quite the learning experience. It has been a crash course in trolly cars, their terminology, destinations, and late nineteen/early twentieth century mass transit, and as a former bus driver at UMass Amherst, I am interested in how people move, specifically the history of it. Right. So, trolleys. As of now, destinations are still being researched and photos are still being selected, and I expect that this will be the toughest part of the whole project, considering the number of albums yet untouched. With this in mind, though, half of the fun is looking for that one perfect photograph to perfectly reflect the background research being dug up, right? I have my work cut out for me, but this should be fun. It has been thus far, at least.Chrishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18033003688766034612noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2347946254890857739.post-11945406908460085022011-06-15T08:06:00.000-07:002011-06-16T08:49:04.048-07:00Our new online catalog
The Seashore Trolley Museum Library is now on LibraryThing! YCCC alum Christopher Carney will serve as the project’s Archival Intern. After attending YCCC, Chris received his Bachelor’s degree in History and Japanese Studies from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst and plans to pursue a graduate degree in Library and Information Science with a concentration in Archival Management this fall. The project will take place over the summer at the YCCC Library, under the supervision of Amber Tatnall, Library Director. The online exhibit will consist of digitized historical photographs from the Museum’s collection, an exhibit narrative, and hand-drawn maps from the previously unpublished Atlas of Maine Trolleys. Description of individual photographs continues, but our primary effort has been around preservation. With the help of Olivia and two new volunteers, Deb and Alicia, we have succeeded in passing the halfway point: 12 out of 24 albums are completely preserved! That means photocopying the original album, prepping the cataloging sheets and mounting pages, and then shifting the photos from the old albums to the new archival binders. We are going through tons of supplies - more than I anticipated. But oh, the binders are looking good! In the photo above, the blue binders on the top shelf are the completed albums.
The Seashore Trolley Museum Libraryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04824983375415549633noreply@blogger.com0
